Hello all,

Was looking through my phone photos and came across some pics of an engine from a boat I looked at last year. Being new to boats I was very cautious. I walked away from this due to signs of corrosion/rusty water around the engine/riser. What do you think - did I dodge a bullet?

Darren.

Yep. Possibly saved yerself $4 in riser gaskets.

Is this a serious question? Who cares, unless someone you know actually bought it.

love the deep sarcasm:)

i assumed that water leaking outside could mean water leaking inside which would be a bad thing? perhaps not...

I would have been concerned.
Leaks outside, could easily be leaking on the inside and running water into the engine.
Looks like there may have been a headgasket issue too.

Just noticed that comment. Yeah, it is. You maybe know the answer. I don't. Hence the question. I was curious as to the extent of concern that those signs would cause. If you don't care why comment?

Thanks Bomar. Just the info I was looking for.

As posted before, could be a couple riser gaskets, could be internal engine damage, manifold replacement, riser replacement. Anywhere from $5 to thousands. Absolutely no way to tell from the pics.
Perform a PFMEA (Process Failure Modes and Effects Analysis). In the end it'll give you a pareto of likely failures. More failures possible = more risk in purchasing = you breathing a sigh of relief for making the right choice in looking elsewhere.

Did you dodge a bullet? No one will ever know, except the guy that bought the boat.
