Hi, Im going to look at a 89 Bayliner Capri that needs engine work. It has the 2.3 ford motor with OMC drive. He is asking $1000 OBO for the whole package with trailer. Im just wondering what may be the problem when it starts in the driveway and not the lake??? If I can get it for possibly $800 I think this could be a good deal? Here is what the ad says........

1989 Bayliner Capri 19 ft open bow, needs motor work, don't know whats wrong with motor it did run on dry land and then it dies out in the water. sitting in driveway for two years. Can't get it started now, maybe the battery. Custom tow cover, garmin blue 160 depth finder, trailer has easy guide ons, and trailer is in good shape. Boat body is in good shape, one soft spot on the floor, interior ok shape, some spots starting to crack. Need to get rid of $1000.00 or obo.

Other than there are virtually NO PARTS AT ALL for the engine, and the company that made the drive has been out of business for quite a while, and the floor is rotten and needs replaced, most likely transom is too, and needs a new interior.....
I am guessing that the $1000 he is asking is $1400 too much.

Soft spot on floor translates to floor is waterlogged, dry rot... possible stringer issue, possible saturated foam under floor. That can be a sizeable job to redo. The boat restoration forum on this site has info on that.

The engine stopping on the water might have been an issue with bad gas/gunk in the tank that clogged the filters.

OMC does not exist anymore. Getting parts can be an issue. Plus, OMC doesn't have the greatest reputation.

The "some parts starting to crack" would worry me.

It sounds like you might get a boat with a lot of potential problems requiring lots of work on your part.

Not being able to test drive it means you cannot check out if the drive is functional. Especially since it is an OMC, that would be a big concern.

If you got that boat for free, it would be WAY overpriced.

I bought an 86 with Volvo penta same deal inside shot rotted engin block cracked. I however build and do everything myself. If that's what u do as well buy it for much less!! Like 100 bucks! I paid 400 for mine with 305 chevy. I took out 305 and took to scrapyard. Replaced w 350. Woodwork was major deal. It will easily cost u another 4k If u do it all yourself. Just my opinion.
