Re: How to change L/U Oil

you have a lower and upper drain screws on the right side of your gear case. remove the lower one first, place pan under it then remove upper one. You will need a special pump and 2 quarts of marine gear oil, sold at wal mart or any boat supply store. usually 1 quart will do the job but sometimes it takes just a little more. you connect the pump hose to the LOWER drain hole then pumop until it runs out of upper hole, replace upper screw and then remove hose connector and quickly replace lower drain screw..it is recommended to replace the washers each time. the boat shop near me sells the synthetic blend oil which I prefer.

you will also want to drain the oil into a clean pan and look closely for any water intrusion into the case which would mean you need to replace the gear case seals.

You got out what was in there. Remember to fill it up (1qt + some).

Re: How to change L/U Oil

If you only got about a pint out instead of a quart then it has probably been leaking. If oil gets out water will most probably get in.

The oil you have drained should be clear and bright, if not its got water in it!

If it looks OK refill to the correct level with however much it takes. Check again after you have run it a bit, both for level and condition.

If the old oil was not clear and bright then you need to be thinking about pressure/vacuum testing and seal replacement.

A high viscosity outboard gear oil. Which will be an EP oil in the SAE viscosity range 80W-90 to API spec GL4 or GL5 but with added inhibitors to guard against the effects of water ingress

You get what you pay for; the better gear oils cost more.

Your motor places very high demand on the gearcase so I would use what the manufacturer specified which is probably OMC/BRP Ultra HPF.

Gearcase capacity is 34 ounces. Turn the prop occasionally while draining; sometimes it airlocks, especially when cold. Gearcase drains best in the running position.

Will this work Quicksilver High-Performance Gear Lube This premium gear lube features improved emulsifiers to help protect gears if water enters the gear housing. Tackifiers improve oil film adhesion to gears and internal components. Extra additives protect gears from metal-to-metal contact and excessive wear. Recommended for use in outboards and sterndrives that require 85W-90 gear lube.
