Hello all,

I recently picked up a johnson jw-11 at a yardsale for 25$. I thought it was 20 years old or so, turns out its a 55 year model, which is amazing considering the condition its in. The motor was locked up, so i dissasembled completely, freed the pistons and reassembled. Anyways, I replaced the coils, cleaned the tank, fuel filter and carborator, installed new impellor and now the motor will start and run. The only problem I'm having with it is that it won't run on the idle setting. It runs at the start position and will slow down to the arrow just right of the word slow on speed control. I have the settings on the carb at 3/4 on the slow and 1/4 on the fast and it seems to run fine other than it won't idle. I can't seem to find a setting that the motor will idle on.

Thanks

Did you take the carb right apart and clean all the little holes in it? There's probably old gunked up gas in there plugging some of the idle ports. That'd be my guess. Did you soak the carb at all or blow out all the holes?

I took the carb apart completely. It looks as though it has had a carb kit installed recently. I cleaned out all the little holes i could find and boiled the body in water for 20 minutes. The packing material behind the lower adjustment had gone bad, I'm not sure what to replace that with. Other than that, everything seemed to be in great shape. It doesn't leak or anything.

Also, if anyone is familiar with the johnson 3 horse motors, i have a question about the throtle control plate. The words 'stop', 'slow', 'start' and 'fast' are written left to right. Between the words stop and slow, closer to slow, there are two small dots. I think that is the idle positition, as the dots are just wide enough apart for the control knob to fit between. Is that correct?

thanks again

If the packing material is missing, your little outboard will never idle properly. Any Evinrude dealer can sell you the packing material. Also, boiling a carb in water does nothing to remove deposits of varnish, etc. You can buy a bucket of carburetor cleaner. It will have a basket in it. The metal parts of the carb are soaked in that cleaner, then rinsed with water. That will remove all varnish. Do not put any parts not made of metal in this cleaner.

Ok, thanks for the advice! I'll get the packing material replaced asap. A friend at work told me to try soaking the body in vinigar, which is where its at atm. Vinigar worked to free up the in-tank filter that was clogged when I aquired the motor. If that doesn't work i'll get the carb cleaner that you mentioned. I'm pretty sure there isn't a clog anywhere, because i've chased all channels with WD-40; however i'm just trying to make sure there isn't some build up in the upper body of the carb that is affecting the idle. The packing in the upper adjust is still intact, its only the lower adj. that is deteriated: I'm going to get the stuff to replace both of them of them though. I'm going to try to have it running again by this weekend, weather permiting i'm going to take my boat out fishing to see how well this motor does on the river.

Thanks again,
Brad
