II bought my boat last year '62 skiflite
Boat motor and trailer for 125. Lights and wheel, 180.

Last year I replaced the transom, now I'm tackling the deck and stringers. I have the deck gone and stringers. Inner hull is ground down and ready for stringers. I measured them up and ready to put them in.

Here comes my neighbor. As we are talking, he says I'm putting in too much work for a 200 dollar boat.
Says I'm only going to have this boat for probably a couple of years. Told me to use Pressure treated lumber, construction adhesive the stringers in, lay the deck down with more construction adhesive and screw it to the stringers. Fiberglass the edges of the deck and seal the middle of the plywood. Go fishing..... Told me fiber glassing the stringers in would be a waste of time for this boat. "Should be all sealed up so no worries about water getting in below the deck.

Thoughts on my conversation last night?

I don't want to sound mean or anything, but I think your neighbor is full of it. I'm sure if you follow what your neighbor said your boat will only last a couple of years.

Ayuh,... That line is pure Bullship....

If you're only going to run it a few years,... Go with his plan,... That's about how long it'll last...

Your neighbor might be a good neighbor and a nice guy coming over and giving you his advice unsolicited BUT 1 Does he won a boat, 2 has he ever worked on said boat, 3 how well are his reapirs holding up. The are two possibilities of the sterotype that he falls into: he is a laberer for a construction company who thinks he runs the company or he is a suit who sits in an office thinking up ways to make everones life harder. Glue the stringers in wrap them in glass just like your orginal plan. So that old girl is 48 years old, do it right and she will last another 50 years. do it the way your neighbor suggested and it will last 3-5 maby

lol! If'n it weren't for people having done repairs like your neighbor suggested there wouldn't be anything going on in this forum!:D

Hard part's done Buzz, do the rest like you planned and you'll have a boat you can be proud of.

They'll be wrapped in glass. For sure.. I mean I'm right there.

He does have a boat.. Looks to be a real nice fishing boat. I dont know much about boats (new to boating, just started last year) but I see on his boat cover it's a Nitro.

He may have been just saying that because for the last 2 weekends he's been listening to me using a grinder for several hours. (I only have 2-3 inch angle grinder).

I agree with above said, the hard part's done, finish the right way which is the way you were going to do it. And she will last a long time!! Then when it comes time for resale. you can say hey I gutted this boat and rebuilt it right. That will put any buyers mind at ease especially if you have pics to prove you did the work and did it right.

This is funny!!! My brothers boat is a prime example of this...the things that PO do to "try" and "fix" things without taking the time to learn how to do it right always amazes me!:D:D

Do right the first time and you wont be finding your self doing again next year! Put that glass in!:D

I can remember, as a kid, my grandmother thought everything could be fixed with either a little 2-in-1 oil or electrical tape.... so I would try one of those first... in honor of her :D

Grandma was wrong...it's WD-40 and duct tape.
