Doing a lower unit job on my '73 Mercruiser pre alpha drive (the one with the eyelet loop on top) and looking for a set of instructions and helpful tips/tricks from people that have done this before.

Thanks very much in advance for the help!

Re: MerCruiser PreAlpha Water Pump Swap

I should have added- it's raw water cooled. I'm doing the pickup pump in the lower unit, not the circulating pump. I didn't see a segment in the manual that I downloaded pertaining to this, unless I missed something? Thanks for the quick response!

I can't open that link for some reason. The manual I have already downloaded off of this site (if memory serves me) has section 3 as the Electrical section- part 17 is the 'Rectifier Bridge' and 'Stator'. Did I get the wrong manual?

Re: MerCruiser PreAlpha Water Pump Swap

ya want s/m #1
ya want to look at pp 6A-5. waterpump assy and disassy.

it's easier to assemble the lower to the upper when the drive is on the bench.

there's pm to do if you decide to take the drive off the boat. ie. inspect and lub ujoints, gimble brg. check drive alignment. check for water intrusion, check the bellows, lub shift slide and shift lever etc.

Re: MerCruiser PreAlpha Water Pump Swap

Outdrive is staying on the boat so I can't do much in the way of P/M besides just give it a thorough lookover. Bellows, for expample will be getting replaced at the end of the season/early next season as they're just showing signs of cracking. Is there any kind of gasket or sealant that is required when marrying the lower/upper back together, or is it just pressure sealed?

shift into fwd gear, remove trim tab and allen bolt unerneath it, drain outdrive, remove the front nit and 2 bottom nuts, loosen the 2 side nuts , lower the unit , remove the 2 side nuts, unit should drop free.
To Install: turn lower unit splined shaft fully clockwise while turning prop counter untill locked. DO NOT MOVE PROP,should be locked at this point. raise unit and catch the front nut by a few threads, turning prop CCW to line driveshaft splines up. start side nuts, make sure the upper shoe lines up with the splined shaft, push drive upward untill shoes are mated, start snugging 2 side nuts.bottom nuts, allen bolt under trim tab, tighten all nuts, fill with oil.

use a bungee cord to load the prop ccw. that'll help it stay if fwd.

no, but there is a quad ring which is the seal between the upper and lower and the passage that the gear lub takes between the two. it's similar to a small oring but is not an oring. i think the s/m will show ya a pic of it's placement. the part will come in the water pump rebuild kit ya get from mercrusier.
