Can anyone help? I have purchased a 18 fastwin and I am having trouble finding a presurized fuel tank for it. Can a pump be used in its place? Where can I look for presurized tanks? The motor seems to run when bypassing the old connection but it dosent run correctly. Also where is the discharge for the water. Any help that anyone could provide would be helpful.

Thanks

Re: Evinrude fastwin 18

most of the water is expelled through the exhuast relief ports about 12 inches above the large bolt on the lower unit.

As for tanks, ebay is your best bet. expect to pay more than $50 for a roughed up tank with hose and female connector. Converting to fuel pump is possible, but these motors were designed to work with the pressure tank system.

These motors are easily converted over to a fuel pump set up and single line tank. All you need to do is find a bypass cover and fuel pump for a 1960, or newer 18, 20 or 25 hp and swap it out. Of course, you'll also need the fuel line reciever that mounts on the motor too.

You could possibly find a good working pressure tank for cheap, like I did, but the newer and more modern single line tanks are easily obtainable anywhere you find marine supplies.

some people swear that making that conversion will affect the motor's performance, in a negative way. For what it costs to buy a tank, hose, fuel pump, male connector, by-pass valve, and new fuel line, you can get a pressure tank and it won't lose its value if you take care of it

That's a false hood. The 18's were built more years with the fuel pump system, than the pressure tank system. If you shop right, you can get the stuff pretty reasonable.....say like a salvage yard.

Even if you're lucky enough to find a pressure tank for under $50.00, better make sure it isn't rusty inside and the gaskets and hoses are in good working order. Gotta remember, these tanks are over 50 years old now and are prone to bad gaskets, hoses and worn connectors. I got lucky and posted a want ad on Craigslist and found one very local to me for 10 bucks, but that's a once in a life time deal. It works great and no rust. It's always good to explore this option, but a conversion is also a good option too.

Thanks to all for the help. As it turns out the original owner of the motor actually came up with the original tank. It will need some work but seems to be in fair condition.

Cool. That will save you some money. The o-rings for the connector can be obtained at your local marine supply. I've seen kits for them at vintageoutboard.com. Lately, it seems like the webpage won't load, so call them at:

This is true. If you watch long enough and can jump on it, you can get a real bargain. I found one, complete with hoses and connector for $15 on CL. It was in an ad for a bunch of tanks and other parts. I called and drove over there immediately and got it. I don't even have an engine it would fit, but I probably will someday.

The nice thing about having a couple of good pressure tanks is that you can now go after all the motors they work with. :D

Ooops, sorry. I forget that not everyone wishes to be infected with the old outboard disease... ;)

Re: Evinrude fastwin 18

Yesterday I drove 25 miles to buy a pressure tank for $10. I called they guy and he said it did not have any rust on the inside. The day was nice and sunny so I took the chance and went for a nice country drive....needed something to do! The guy was nice enough and we chatted about motors for a while. From the outside, the tank looked pretty good. So I bought it without looking inside. After all, one doesn't drive 50 miles round trip and walk away empty handed for two fins. I got home and peeked inside...a bucket of rust! Well, the female connector is worth at least $10...considering the cost of fuel...I was robbed by my own stupidity!

:eek: Oh no!! Sorry to hear that. There isn't any way of saving it? Well, you can always hunt for another tank, that is minus the connector. I guess the connectors alone, are half the value of the tank.

I've had a few that were kinda crusty on the inside. I removed the top canister assembly and then sanded the inside and sealed it with a gas tank sealer.
