My boat is currently registered to 11/10 however Im waiting on a new sticker and you know the Government, there is no rush for them to get it to me thats for sure.

I was wondering if anybody knew the statues on registration and proof of registration. If FWC pulls me over for expired sticker I am current and sticker is in the mail. Will he still issue a citation? If so, can I contest the citation and provide proof of registration at said citation date? What a waste of time, but in reality I havent seen FWC on the lake in MONTHS.

Of course you know the luck of us boaters, they will be doing some experiment on the lake with 5000 FWC boats the day I decide to go out.

hahaha! Hell it may not be worth the hassle but somebody can chime in and share their experience and give me some legal advice?

By the way FYI it may be helpful I live on the lake and have several boats parked in the boathouse. FWC outta cut me some slack thats my backyard! lol

In Vermont if you declare the paperwork is in the mail ..... you are still issued a citation but it is annotated on it and it will be dismissed IF it was true..... if it was a lie then you are guilty with the maximum fine......

Re: Getting caught with expired sticker?

So in Minnesota maybe 6 years ago, I was up at my folks' lake home and I took their boat out for the first time of the year. Little did I realize that the renewal stickers never made it on the boat. I was with my wife and then first son. We got trailed for a while by a DNR boat and they, finally pulled us over. I explained to them that we have a place on the lake and the stickers were purchased but not on the boat. They were happy that we had a lifejacket on our then one year old but insisted they follow us back to our dock. We went back there, proved we were residents on the lake, they talked amongst themselves and ultimately wrote a warning. We received the warning only because they could see the stickers were purchased (but obviously never made it on the boat or to the lake). Had that not been the case and had we not had a pfd on our son, they would have issued a citation. These two DNR officers were amazingly somber about the whole thing just as I was amazed when they explained many folks don't put life jackets on their kids.

Depends on the state. If you ask about your state specifically, maybe a fellow citizen of that state would know.

You said you expire 11/10. That would be November 2010, seven months from now? Am I missing something ... ?

In NJ the actual violation is not having the sticker on the boat and then a seperate one for not renewing it. So even if you have it in your pocket you still get it.

In Georgia, they give you a temporary number to use if you get pulled over. Can you call them and see if they can give you any sort of number like that? I can't remember what it is actually called, but basically, it's a temporary registration number that you carry on board that is good for 30 days...

+1^^^^^^

If I forget registration until last minute I just do it online so I can print a reciept. And I have been stopped. After showing them the receipt and letting them do there safety inspection I'm on my way. Never a problem.

Re: Getting caught with expired sticker?

In these economic times the enforcement agencies are pushed like everyone else to generate revenue, I see many agencies writing more small time offense summonses to do just that, in fact many agencies might "require" enforcement officers to issue more small fines rather than large fines, just like a tax surcharge. The agencies become a tax collection bureau and less law enforcement.
