I replaced the water pump on my '77 85hp johnson(85EL77S). The first time I reassembled I crunched a pickup tube. Straightend the tube and rounded it up and made a jig to hold the tubes in the right place and reassembled, 99% sure it's together correctly. Test ran it again with the earmuffs on and a little water comes out of the tells, but it doesn't seem like as much as I remember and water is gushing out of the grommet where the shift rod enters the lower unit, at least the pump seems to be pushing a lot of water. I took it apart again and put a hose directly into the starboard copper tube(I believe this is water up). Water does comes out the tells, but really dumps through the exhaust housing. Sorry for the long explanation, but what I'm wodering is if that is normal. The water temp from the hose is pretty cold and I've not run the motor very long on the ears. Is there a thermostat that would dump water through the housing till the heads warms up or did I mess something up further up the housing?

on muffs you should not rev above 1500 rpms. so you only get a little out the exhaust relief ports, rest goes out the prop.

It's normal and you notice it a lot on muffs. The system dumps the water that is not going through the engine when the thermostat (vernatherm) is closed and the excess water partially fills the midsection and cools the exhaust, then drains out the several drains at the top of the gearcase.

Very much appreciate the information, was afraid to take it out and risk overheating it just to see how the system is supposed to work.
Is the vernatherm in the "manifold" on the back of the motor where the hoses from the heads meet?

Yes. Be sure you have the parts including gaskets before pulling it. The vernatherm is 105 degrees, not 140.
