1992 120HP Top End problem

Hey everyone...I'm new to the site!! I have recently bought a 1992 Maxum 2100ldc with a 120 hp Force L Drive motor. It looks to be in pretty good shape, and I got a heck of a deal for the boat, but when in the water it will only run up to 2200 rpm. In neutral it will rev just fine, but not in gear. I have been reading some of the posts on here and I just recently ordered the parts to rebuild my fuel pump to start out. Also, the guy that had the boat before me has installed an inline fuel filter, I'm sure it was an "El Cheapo" filter from Wally World,but do you think this may be causing some restriction on the top end as well? Thanks!

You need to start from the bottom and check out the engine to get a base line. Check compression, spark, fuel pump condition, carb float bowl for sediment etc.

The guy i got it from said he had recently taken the carbs off and cleaned them real good and put them back on with same problem. But...I will take it to someone to have compression check done <I dont have the tools!>

Also, I had an '88 35 hp Force that kinda had the same problem. I changed plugs, put new fuel tank, fuel lines, cleaned carb, and filter and it ran fine! maybe same thing...not sure!

You can buy a compression gage from sears for about $35 and a spark tester from Advance auto for about $5. A boat mechanic will probably charge $70 to $80 an hour and you aren't sure what you are getting for it.

Checking spark and compression is easy. Buy the tools and we will talk you through it.
