9.5 Water leaking

I have a 9.5 Johnson and when I was running it in a barrel with the water level above the intake but not above the short shaft outerhousing I could see water dribbling out from under the exterior housing. It isn't coming from the upper engine compartment as I had the cover off while it was running. Is this a normal cooling part that I just never noticed before in deeper water?

Can you post a pic of where it is coming from?

The water is dribbling down from the point where the white piece of paper is stuck into.

I've never noticed that on my 9.5 as even with a new impellar I don't think I could run that shallow, thats only about 4" about the plate. Is there water coming out the exhaust on the rear of the cowl?

OOPS it was a type o it surley is a 9.5. yes water is coming our where it is supposed to and there is no water leaking in the upper engine compartment anywhere it is below that in a place I can't see into when it is running, but it is up under the outer housing?

Its normal. There are drain holes up inside the exhaust housing that lets water that gets into the leg come out.

Re: 9.5 Water leaking

For those who want to know why..The drive shaft runs in a tube isolating it from the exhaust and spent cooling water. That keeps the obnoxious exhaust and stuff away from the crankshaft main bearing and seal.

Water escapes from the drive shaft hole in the water pump housing. It would fill the isolation tube and "see" the crankshaft seal sticking down into it. That is, except for the two big drain holes. Those, and the vent hole, keep the isolation chamber from filling up.

There you have it, folks. What you see is the water draining out those two big holes. That's a good thing.

When I take the top off of my 9.5 it still pees out of the top as well as the leaking he described. I got the impression he said it stopped coming from the lower cowling. Mine has a hose that runs from the engine to the cowling to carry the water out of the engine.

I see now he was refering to the fact that the hose wasn't leaking in the engine compartment. Got it.

F_R: There is no doubt in my mind why your called a Supreme Mariner. I think most of us 9.5 owners (and others) just learned a valuable lesson today. Thanks for that. I'm more of a visual learner and those pictures helped a great deal. Rick.
