Problems with my mercury??

Hello-
My father bought me a 7.5 horsepower mercury and it has been running good but I had troubles today.It died on the lake and I could get it started but when I gave it gas It would die? Can anyone help? I have the serial #5700581 not sure where to find the year of this motor.

I would start with a total carb rebuild this includes a buying yamaha carb dip and letting the carb sit in it for at least 24 hours.
