I have a 1982 Lund Pike 15, which is about 15 feet long with a 50 hp Mercury. I was wondering what the smallest kicker motor is I could put on it and still move at an acceptable speed without over working the kicker motor?

That would depend on what an acceptable speed is for you.

Re: Kicker motor size range?

Sorry I should have included more info. I am interested in buying a kicker motor for my boat so that I can get on some of the lakes around me that have a 10 hp or lower engine size at a no wake speed. I was wondering how small of a hp motor I could put on my boat that would move me at just under wake speed or a little slower and would not take all day to get across the lake?

In that case I would go with a 9.9hp. Will you be removing the 50hp to put the other one on ??? or do you want it on a kicker bracket ??

I was thinking of finding one with a long shaft and putting it beside the 50 hp. I had wondered about weight issues since the boat is only rated for a 40 hp max but had bought the boat with the 50 hp motor on it. Possible transom issues?

Johnson or Evinrude 9.9. Light weight and plenty of power for your little Lund. I'll refrain from talking about the 50 on there. It's too much outboard for your boat, though.

I run a 60hp Johnson and a 9.9 Johnson short shaft on my 16' Crestliner. The 9.9 will troll all day and actually moves that boat at a pretty good clip when I crank it up at the end of the day. I think a 5 would troll that boat fine, but the 9.9 makes a great back up. I would get a transom jack that is sturdy enough to trailer the motor on though. I don't have the nerve to trust mine going down the highway yet and that 9.9 get kinda heavy lugging it on and off.

Oh yeah, I don't think you have to worry about over working a kicker. Biggest issue is under working them. You need to crank it up a few times a day to try and burn off the fuel that is loading up in there.

I also agree with the 9.9 OR a 15.The 15 is same weight, the HP is gained thru carband or the exhust tuning. So ,if you come across either one at a good price ,dont let the HP between these 2 motors be a factor. If you dont have room on your tramsom mounting,I suggest you look into a bracket to attach on the transom, you wont need a long shaft ,if you locate the bracket at the usable hieght, especially if you use an eez-e-in bracket that adjusts to hight. That will make your life a whole lot easies because a long shaft may not be as available as the standard short shaft.I have done alot of mechanical work on the 9.9 and 15,they are great ,reliable engines,BUT,.run the engine eveytime you can,the carb passages are obvously small, therefore more prone to get gummed up from lack of use.I cannot begin to tell you how many boaters, especially sailboaters found their kicker non working when it was NEEDED.Many said"It worked great last time I use it"often it was many months without a start up.Also,be kind to it,it has an impeller that can dry up and then seperate from its hub, that is mostly from sitting. As for the bracket, the name I gave is a kinda sounding name, but it is one of the major manufacturers. They come in aluminum or stainless steel.I highly suggest you use the alum.on your boat.Dissimiliar metals with alum.have a VERY corrosive effect.Be sure to use alum.fittings or plastic on your boat.As for what bolts to mount it with,I would suggest alum if you can find them.needs 4 ,you might want to call the manufacturer for some tech help.

you could also just buy a 15hp and get a 9.9 cowling/decals and use it on the hp restricted lakes
