Shift fork slipping?

Alpha 1 gen 1. Changed impeller (left upper half of drive attached). Now
the shift fork on the transom assembly slips off of the gear lever on the
outdrive. I figured I didn't have everything aligned correctly during
reassembly and bent/broke something, but I split the case and removed the
drive--everything seems straight, and I don't even see how something COULD
bend. Only thing might be the shift shaft lying too low on the drive
maybe? There's a lip that lies flush with the drive housing; at this point
it slips. If I pull the shaft up a bit, it works fine...pics attached

Looks like the washer is missing on top of the lower shift shaft. Separate the cases and see if it is in place. good luck Bill

They are talking about part 52 here http://www.mercruiserparts.com/Show...GEAR+HOUSING(DRIVESHAFT)+-+(COUNTER+ROTATION) If not in place will allow shift shaft to drop too far down on the lower shift shaft. If you can see the rubber washer it is missing.

thanks for the pic--i looked at my other drives, and we're just talking about that SS washer? looks too thin to keep the shifter from dropping. ah well, i'll check it out again next time i take the drive off. for now it's a hose clamp keeping it from dropping...

That is it http://www.mercruiserparts.com/showSpecialPicture.asp?pn=29395 problem is when you drop the lower unit, there is nothing holding it in place and can slip off of the shaft if you tip the lower unit over. I know cus I did it once myself, and forgot about it this spring when I took my lower in for fin repair, luckily My guy taped it in place for me. Look around where you had the unit, bet it is on the floor someplace.

ya know...when reinstalling an outdrive at some point this spring, i noticed an extra washer. looked like one of the 5 that mount the drive to the transom housing. of course, i ignored it. betcha that was it.

Re: Shift fork slipping?

That sure sounds like it, especially if it has a shiny circle around the hole on one side where the shift shaft sets. Hang on to it if you have it, and remember to take the clamp off next time you pull the drive :D:D.
