I have an 87 75 horse 4 cyl. mercury when I look through the 1 plug hole I can see little chips and I also have some chips on the end of my plug there is 10 bolt heads around the back of my motor on the edges that look like they hold on the piece that the plugs screw into my question is can I take the bolts out and see where the chips are coming from ? and if I take these bolts out and try to take this piece off is it going to mess up anything inside ? Thank you for your help

The cylinder jugs and sparkplug hole... inline engines do not have a head gasket so you will not see the piston. Aluminum throw off (chips) are signs of preignition and needs to be addressed soon! This can come from old fuel, weak impeller, defective ignition system(trigger or pack) or over advanced timing.

I just replaced my stator would a bad stator cause these chips?
and is there any tests I can do to find out which one of those is causing them ?

If it was ok before you replaced stator, check the timing with a timing light.

Re: What can I see if I take this plate off

it did it for the first time right before I replaced the stator then after I replaced it first time out it did it again but I thought maybe that was just some chips that was left inside from the first time. These chips also get stuck to the electrode on my #1 plug and cause me to lose power that is why I changed my stator I lost my top end power after I changed stator and cleaned plug I took it out again ran good for awhile then lost power again after I got home looked at plug and there was chips stuck to the electrode again before this I have never had a problem I was running some old gas in it when it did it the first time it was left in the tank from last year I know not the smartest thing so with what you said that could definatley be it but the second time I had a fresh tank of fuel that is what makes me think it was left over from the first time and my motor seems to be peeing good steady stream with it hooked to ear muffs it looks like it could be possible to be a little stronger and timing I havent check yet where should it be timed at ? so should I replace the impeller ? I dont want to keep running it with fresh fuel thinking I fixed it if something is still wrong and mess it up worse so any suggestions is appreciated

Thank You
Johnnie

Re: What can I see if I take this plate off

I just timed it at 5 degrees at idle there is a sticker on it that reads :

M-75
Timing Pickup
4 degrees ATDC Running
at cranking speed
of 400 rpm (which is
27 Degrees BTDC at 5500 rpm)

I cannot time at 5500 rpm because I do not have a working tach. Is this ok? if I need to adjust the timing How do I adjust it? I can adjust them on an auto but I am lost on a outboard

Thanks
Johnnie

You do not need a tach to set the max timing. Just remove all spark plugs but #1. Install plugs into their wires and ground them to block. Now set throttle to max and crank motor. While cranking, set spark advance to max timing. 23* sounds high to me, you might set it to 21* for safety.
