RDS-22 wont start

I bought a boat (first time). The previous owner said he used it last year.

I can't get it to start, although it turns over really nice. I replaced the battery and have a new fuel tank and line to the engine.

If I remove the new plugs and squirt fuel in the cylinders, it will run for a second or two and then cut out.

Since I'm so new to this, I have no idea what to look for first.

Oh nice. A 1960 40hp.:D Sure are a lot of those around still.

You can probably remove the high speed needle once to see if you're getting fuel to the carb. Fuel will run out. If not, then it's likely the float is stuck shut or there is an obstruction in the fuel system, to the carb. The best way to narrow it down, is take the inlet hose off the carb and squeeze the primer bulb. If gas comes out, nice and free, then your problem is narrowed down to the carb. One other common problem on those old 40's, is if your fuel pump diaphram is bad, then fuel will fill one of the cylinder and therefore, it'll run out on the ground, through the exhuast port.

But anyway, here are two good things to look over, before you take it out. If the carb needs rebuilding, then it's likely the fuel pump will too.

I think I'll leave this to the pros and haul it to a local marina.

Good luck finding a "pro" who will even work on a 50 year-old motor. The forum has pro's who can help you with any problem and the labor rates are a whole lot better!

Exactly.:D You're much better fixing it yourself, than waiting for weeks and spending hundreds of dollars. These old 40's are easy to work on and a person with a little bit of know how can fix one up and make it run right.
