63 Evinrude Impeller redo

I am replacing the impeller and housing on my old Evinrude fisherman (5.5 HP) and am using a new re-manufactured housing and impeller.
The kit only comes with (1) gasket for the housing and my Clymer manual says there should be one on each side of the wear plate.
My mechanic told me when I bought the kit that I only needed a gasket on the upper side of the wear plate next to the impeller, but I'm wondering about the side of the housing that fits against the bearing plate. Should I get another one or just use some form-a-gasket for that side?

Also, the manual recommends gluing in the new tube grommet with Scotch Grip Rubber Adhesive 1300. Can anyone recommend a substitute for this?
I have a 3M silicone adhesive that's supposed to be excellent gasket adhesive but not spec'ed for under the water line. Permatex form-a-gasket?
I also have gasket sealing compound?

Thanks for your input.

sealing compound should not be permanent. that is exactly why we do not recommend Clymer, and Seloc manuals.

OEM Johnson only. outboardbooks.com or Searayman13 on ebay.

I don't know about any re-manufactured pump housings. So, I don't know about any gaskets for it. Where did you get one?

Anyhoo, a "normal" new pump housing does not have any gaskets at all. You should seal the stainless plate to the bearing housing below it with most any gasket sealant. There IS a gasket between the bearing housing and gearcase, if you took the bearing housing out.

Re: 63 Evinrude Impeller redo

I have seen kits where there is a gasket that goes between the wear plate and the upper bearing plate, but it is not necessary. I haven't seen one come from the factory that way. After all, water goes under the wear plate and is sucked into the center portion, so a gasket there is pointless. The newer style of water pump kits, do have a spagetti seal around the under side of the housing, so it isn't absolutely necessary to put any sealor on those either. If you're using the original style impeller with housing, then I would apply a light coat of sealor around the bottom of the housing.

A lot of people use the newer style of water pump kits, if their old housing is pitted up from corrosion. The newer style has a stainless steel liner, which will probably never wear out, as long as your motor exhists and the impellers will probably have an availability that will outlast the old style.

Thanks guys, I just used a silicone rated for under water and semi-permanent for under the housing. Completely coated top and bottom of the gasket with gasket sealing compound between wear plate and housing.

Yea, silicone should work fine. That part will always stay cool. I usually use the non-hardening permatex, too and it's always worked well.
