Securing the Anchor Line

This is gonna sound pretty dumb, but I replaced the anchor rode that came with the boat, and want to secure the bitter end inside the locker so we can't accidentally lose all the ground tackle overboard. I expected to find a tie-off in the anchor locker- maybe a cleat or ring attached to the bow eye bolts. Nothing.

Trying to figure out what I can put down there without drillng holes and having a backing plate and bolts on the outside of the hull.

Anyone know of a stainless ring or something that I can attach to the bow eye bolts? I'm thinking there oughta be something like that available, but maybe not- and I'm darned if I'd know what to search for if there is.

Anybody have a clever solution?

Maybe a stainless steel eye strap?

Of course, it would have to be sized to fit the two bolts from the bow eye.

I just have a big knot on the end, if i pay out all of the line, it will stop before it all goes overboard.

If enough of the threads of the bow eye are exposed inside the anchor locker, you should be able to bolt on a strap to secure the rode. All you need is two nuts to fit over the bow eye bolts and a stainless strap to bridge between them. The strap shouldn't need to bear the load of the anchored boat, it should only need to keep the anchor from getting lost.

Arks, that's exactly what I was hoping to find, if I can find one to fit the bow eye bolts. Where'd you get that pic?

Dbreskin- yup, same kind of deal.

phwrd- If you mean "knowing" when we're at the end of the rode, mine is marked- 2 black zip ties 10 feet before the end. My concern is having it get away from us entirely.

My bow eye was 1/2 inch. Not enough threads were showing to do what I wanted. I took two 1 1/2 inch long stainless 1/2 inch couplers and put them over the inside threads. Then I fashioned an aluminum plate about 1 X 6 X1/4 and drilled two 1/2 inch holes in it to match. Two short 1/2 stainless bolts connected the plate to the couplers--presto---one home-made cleat. Plenty of room to pass the bitter end eye through and loop it back over.

That's another good idea. Love this place.

BUT, guess what I found once I started searching on the eye straps...

I'm only posting the link because iboats doesn't sell this. It's a "lifting eye nut" and should screw onto the inside stud of my bow eye, I think. I'll check into it over the weekend

well, I drilled the holes and put in a ring to tie the bitter end and a cleat to tie off the anchor rode, all within the locker

Re: Securing the Anchor Line

My bow-rider didn't even have a good sturdy bow cleat so I added one and added a ring on the same bolt under the foredeck for the end of the rode.

(I have been through a Whole Gale at anchor on Lake Erie and appreciate the value of a sturdy anchor setup.)

Re: Securing the Anchor Line

I went cheap/old school on my last boat. My rode passed through the windless which was a 1" hole. I took a 8" piece of PT 2x4 and drilled a hole through it, ran the line through and tied a double knot in it. I would have to had to pay out 300' of line to get to the end so it really wasn't a big issue.

Re: Securing the Anchor Line

I really appreciate all the great ideas, and I've zeroed in on a couple of possibilities. Thank you all!

Just a note for those of you who talk about "putting a knot in the end" to somehow keep it from leaving the boat. I don't know how you're set up, but the opening to my anchor locker is about 1' x 1'. It'd have to be a helluva big knot to keep the tackle in there :)

Have a great weekend !
