VP AQ130 timing issue

Had a quick question regarding the ignition timing of a volvo penta AQ130 engine. My repair manual tells me an AQ130c engine requires 8 degrees BTDC and an AQ130d requires 12 degrees BTDC or the other way around, don't have the book with me.

The issue is I am using a AQ130d engine block with a distributor and head off a AQ130c engine. Is the timing I should use based on the camshaft, distributor or engine block? I would think it would be based on the camshaft, but wouldn't be the first time I would be wrong. Any help would be great.

Re: VP AQ130 timing issue

Not positive on the Volvos, been a long time since I have a B20-based engine. Most engines like 34-36* total advance, which should be in by 3000rpm. The timing at idle will likely be 12-15 depending on how many degrees advance your dizzy is capable of. If it's too much you'll get detonation and have to back off a degree at a time until it's happy.

Re: VP AQ130 timing issue

i have a aq125a the aq145 has the same spec
and the spec is
4 degree when using low octain
10 degree with high octain.
should be the same with yours.
timing is done at slower than normal rpm ....750 rpm
normal is 900rpm for mine

also says 36 degree if setting at 4000rpm

So i would guess on yours 8 degree low octane and 12 for high octain

I thank you all for your replies. After giving it some more thought i realized that an AQ130 engine is a pushrod engine. The cam is not in the head, its in the block. I used the original one. The plate on the side of the engine is stamped AQ130d. My manual tells me for that engine use 8 degrees BTDC for that one. Unless the distributor plays a role in which timing i should use i will go with that. I had it set at 12 BTDC last year. I didnt get any knocking with either 8 or 12 degrees of timing last year. Any other thoughts?

34-36* total advance. Your initial timing may be 8*-15* depending on how much advance your dizzy provides.

Here is a link to the OEM service manual you can download for your engine. The distributor specs, timing and everything else is in the back.

Use the C model information for your D model. The only reason for the model change was drive type, engines were the same.
Be sure you have the proper dwell set for your points and keep it around 62? or 63? for best running. Also check your advance at 2000 rpm.
