Fuel line problems?

My 1982, 18 HP Mercury is starving for fuel. I thought it was the old fuel line and primer bulb but a new line didn't solve the problem. The engine runs fine a low rpms but after a couple of minutes at full power it starts to cut out and the only way I can keep it running is to pump the primer bulb. It even starves with the fuel cap off, bypassing the vented cap.

Has anyone else run into this problem?

Thanks,

John / Airpix

Re: Fuel line problems?

Classic fuel pump diaphragm symptom. If you can pump the primer bulb on the gas tank and it runs OK, but starves when you stop pumping the bulb...you have a hole or crack in the diaphragm.
They typically rot and crack in the off-season. Should be an inexpensive fix. You can easily do yourself.

Re: Fuel line problems?

its part of the fuel pump. buy a fuel pump repair/rebuild kit. its easy to do yourself. i bought one and didnt install it til the boat NEEDED it. did it in the parking lot at the boat ramp in 10 minutes. i either had a repair manual with me or the pump kit came with pictured instructions!Easy fix

Yes,I have a '79 Mariner, all NLA. At www.sea-way.com I was able to find every thing I needed. They don't have a catalog, you just fill out a search form, so you'll need to go to www.crowleymarine.com to get your part no. from their parts diagrams. Crowley may even have it.
