Yeah, I did this this year the first time out. Forgot to open the vent after putting the tank on the boat. Felt like a dummy. BUT, at least I haven't joined the no plug club yet!

Re: 9.8 mercury help...

If you have your tank vent closed that is exactly the symptoms you will see. You can force fuel into the carbs, then the motor will start and run briefly and die. esp as you try to open the throttle because it is trying to draw more fuel but you have it vapor locked. Simple thing to check, did you look to see if your vent was open on your fuel tank?

Re: 9.8 mercury help...

my tank is plastic and seems worn down...maybe i'll replace it and see if that cures the problem...its just that earlier that day it was running fine then suddenly about an hour into trolling it happens...it also clicks right before it dies...thanks in advance.

Sounds like you got some dirt or old primer bulb up in the carb and the fuel system needs a good cleaning

Re: 9.8 mercury help...

Uh-oh.

Wish you had mentioned this at the beginning, but one of us should have asked too....

Your motor is overheating. Your impeller is probably no good at all.

Let's start over. Where do you usually run this engine?

Are you aware that you CANNOT run outboard motors "dry", that is without being in water above the intakes on the foot by the propeller or having a source of water introduced, like with tuning "muffs" that hook onto your garden hose?

IF the answer to these questions is no, we need to back WAY up.

Answer these and we'll see if everyone on here can't get you going. DO NOT RUN YOUR MOTOR AGAIN UNTIL YOU GET MORE ADVICE. If it has over heated even once, you could already have MAJOR engine damage. Ypu may be ucky, but don't run it again until we get you going in the right direction or it will soon be complete toast.

Re: 9.8 mercury help...

it happened to me on the water and i do believe there was enough water present while it died there(was on the river)...although, i did some testing today with the new tank in a 50 gal. drum of water...i did make sure there was enough water also...i run this on a fresh water river...
