I graduated law school today. I have =family coming in town tommorrow so I was detailing the boat. I got her all cleaned up and. I thought I would check the oils etc. The OD oil is milky white. So I split the halves ...

The top of the lower where the stainless splines are have oil on the them am I to assume a seal in my upper has blown?

The screw at the bottom was hand tight at best so I was thinking it may have gotten in there. Also, the oil was not totally emulsified just a mix of white and gear oil. So, should there be oil on the top of the splines I do not think so... ?

There is no gear oil in the bellows....

Please help I will be at it all night

This is on a Alpha one gen 1 drive

Also, the OD was full and does not leak when on land.

The way you find your problem, is to remove the complete drive from the boat. Drain the gear lube. Then do a pressure and vacuum check. With pressure, you can spray soapy water all over it and see where it bubbles if it leaks.

You said there wasn't any gear lube in the bellows, but how about water?

there is nothing in the bellows at all exceot a little bit of grease from the splines which is normal no fluids. Should the top of the Lower unit have gear lube on it ?

What do you mean "On It"
It should have gear lube IN it.
When you put the gear lube in the drain plug hole, it should come out the vent in the upper to tell you it's full.

I am talking about the stainless steel shaft that is long and has splines on the top, and a oring right bellow the splines. This shaft is the tallest part of the lower unit. When I seperated the two halves it had gear lube on it. Is this normal?

I am so sorry, I just read what I was posting and realized how confusing it is. When I say the "lower unit" I mean the lower half of the drive not the "lower unit" as in the out drive just the lower half

So sorry
