starting problems

I have a 97 Force 50hp outboard that I recently replaced the starter due to the starter bracket breaking which required the entire bracket to be welded back to the head. The engine started ok at first but now seems to turn over sometimes but not sometimes. I continue to turn the ignition switch on, off until it engages. I do hear so "clicking" in the engine when the starter will not engage. I have checked the battery for a full charge and it is ok.
Anyone have any suggestions as to the problem. I know nothing of the mechanics of this motor.

Re: starting problems

Have your battery load tested. Just because it charges OK doesn't mean it's able to supply enough current to properly engage the starter.

Check all of the battery connections. Don't forget the ground connection to the block. Do not do a visual check. Disconnect the connections and remove any corrosion with emery cloth or a wire brush.

See of that helps.

Re: starting problems

Since you rewelded everything back on after it broke, there could be binding. Way to test would be to disconnect battery, then manually with your hands move the starter gear up its shaft until fully extended and see if it meshs perfectly with the fly wheel. If it doesnt that would likely be a issue. Also make sure it goes back down quickly after it does start...If it hangs up upon start up, or does not mesh right with the flywheel i would suspect that as a cause.

Otherwise, you either have a bad starter, or there is a loose connection somewhere, or the battery could not be holding a load, simply put, theres gotta be something bad in the circuit. but start with that starter first.
