timing or prop???

this is my engine today out on yesterday - the manufacturer (Bonwitco) says that I should be getting 20-25knots from this package.

I was only getting 6.5 as per the GPS

is it that the engine needs just a slight adjustment with the throttle cable? - the oil:gas mix is 50:1 as per manufacturer

Is all that smoke ok from an engine that has been idle for a long time?
Why arent i getting up any speed?

thanks...

What engine is that? What boat is it on? What rpm is the engine reaching at WOT?

Re: timing or prop???

It's only running on one cylinder. Check compression and spark.

This is what mine is doing right now too, because water is getting in the cylinders. Pull the plugs and see if there is any water on them.

Get a compression tester and check the compression.

Get a spark tester and check the spark on both cyls. Should jump a 1/4" gap with a white-blue snap.

Post results.

Yes your problem will be solved if you get a different motor that runs right (short shaft or not). What is your shaft length? I doubt that is your problem and more likely an issue that was mention before.

short or not, sounds like you are not reaching max rpms... does the cavitation plate align with the bottom of the hull??? if yes then you have the right motor.... look at the picture on the thread http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=392348

did you just purchased this boat? check compression and spark.... if compression is no good powerhead is going have to be rebuild....

if compression is good and cant remember when or just bought this boat you should rebuild the carbs, change spark plugs and wires, water pump and fuel filter....

its much easier to troubleshoot a motor with a working tachometer... tach is pretty much a must on a boat...

if its the prop or timing.... in order to know if the prop is the problem we need to make sure the motor is in to shape....

like ive said, if you just purchased this boat it wouldn't hurt to do the above steps and go from there.... good luck
