How bout a pic?

I don't know why this comes to mind, but they used to put drink holders that looked like wire baskets that would connect to a little round dial mounted on the dash. Not sure though, without a pic.

Guessing without any pics...could be the remote control for a searchlight/spotlight, they used to look like the old ships wheel with the spokes and handles on the outside of the wheel...turn it for port or starboard, push/pull for up/down

Bubba1235 is correct. It will not turn unless you have 1.21 Jigowatts;). That's why he's a Rear Admiral!

Either an electrical switch or a directional control for a spotlight. Made by the Sparton Electonics Co and popular around that time frame. If in good condition it could be worth a few bucks so don't chuck it. I saw the directional spotlight control version sell for $100 on eBay the other day.

HSF is probably correct. We just had a new member show up down in the Starcraft section with a boat with this little device on it. It was the control for a remote spotlight.

Here's the thread. Check out the gauge package on this boat! http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=380450

It might depend on what he is considering the dash. There is the oiling port on top of the steering box, just behind the wheel. That is shaped like a 'little wheel'.

Just taking a stab in the dark. Could be the self detonate button, too.

The best lessons are self-learned.

Push, pull, wiggle, turn, screw or unscrew. The result will answer the question.

First, Poodog...welcome to the forum.
Second, we like a little punctuation in a post.
Third, read my signature and take the hint.
Fourth, we are boat peeps and know many things, but we still like pictures. From what you describe...small wheel is for making small turns:D:D

The correct answer is "air horn" it is a manual horn - you pull out the wheel & push it in to power the horn. Our old houseboat has the exact horn.

A 1974 19 ft Sea Ray didn't have that in 1974.
If you look hard at the pic it a lantern on it. :)

Sparton used that design for electrical switches, spotlight controls, and all sorts of stuff. Without a detailed pic of the item in question from the OP, it could be lots of things.
