Hello everybody,
I have a 1974 merc 1150 inline 6, wich has decided not to start. I know I have crumbling wire issues inside the motor. All of the wires look original. The main wiring from the controlls back to the motor{outside wiring harness?} are not much better looking. I know the battery is charged due to the tilt and choke are all still working. Unfortunitly I am not a motor guy yet as you could probly tell, but would love some ideas on trouble shooting.
Thanks alot, chris

Re: wire issues?

Chris, If the engine wiring harness is real bad, you should replace it. surplusunlimited, com had a good price for me.

That motor needs +12VDC on the red and white wires (next to each other) on the switchbox, in order to have spark. The red is always hot, and the white is energized by the ign switch. Nake sure the ground wires are clean as well.

Re: wire issues?

some of The wires on the inside of the motor are crumbling. The wire from the cylinoid to the starter, and a wire at a point were some are coming together also. When I first experienced the issue I was worming the motor before taking it out. It was turning over as usual then nothing. After checking some things I discovered the power cable to the batery was crumbling. I cut it back some (still looked bad) and put it back together and tried again. The engine turned over better than ever and fired up. Thought I had the problem fixed, untill I was in the water and the problem suraced again. This time nothing worked. I then discovered the wires inside wich look like the power cable.(crumbling and green)The best I've found is 190.00 for outside and 175.00 for inside harnesses. I really don't know what I am looking at inside the motor so is it impossible for me to know what wire goes were? THe wires inside look like original, they are all black and all look exactly the same to me. Thanks for taking the time to read my story man!

Re: wire issues?

you need to get the mercury service manuals and the others (seloc,Glenns) and learn where the wires are going looking at the pictures .take your time and learn what the wires are hooked up to before you start taking them out

Re: wire issues?

Chris, The wiring colors are pretty easy. When you get your new harness, connect them up.

Black is ground. there is a fat black wire that bolts to the case, and a thin one that goes to the starter solenoid, negative side.

yellow is starter solenoid.

Yellow/red is stator to rectifier

orange is unused on your motor

Red goes to rectifier + connection and to red post on switchbox

White goes to white post (next to red) on switchbox

grey goes to choke solenoid.

Brown goes to either yellow wire on the rectifier (for tach signal)

Rapair became CDI Electronics in 2007, but we're still the same knowledgeable, friendly company we've been for the last 28+ years. :)

Thanks for the plug!
