Re: Is This Addicting?

ok this seems to say that i am normal, just with an addiction. one day i will have the perfect boat, and will not want to do any more modifications to it :D
then they would probably put me in a small box and six of my friends will carry me. LOL
but until then, i must be doing some sort of remodeling, modification or something. I almost say thank God I am not living in the USA and there is a requirement to get a very difficult import licence, to import boats, because every time i am in Miami, i see the perfect project to add to my list. and i see them for free on cl and ebay, but not possible to get them to the garage.
So the one that i have now will have to suffer the constant redo :D
and I have one presently up for sale, that is going to have some work done to it soon if it is not sold.

Is it ok to have an addiction that u dont want cured though.

BRA - Boat Restorers Anonymous LOL Just the abbreviation would make the wife keep u away, so u stay safely addicted.

P :) still No Fuss

Re: Is This Addicting?

The good thing is that we get to know every nook and cranny of our craft/s. When I put my first boat on the water, I was ignorant of all the potentially hazardous issues it had. Ignorance aint bliss when your paddling across a giant lake or bailing until your arms give out or worse yet, sunk. Now that I know what I know, I think about how ignorant I was before and all the folks out on the lake with big fancy rigs or even older ones who don't really know their craft. There are a lot of folks that just cank it up and if it runs it runs, if not, it's off to get ripped out of $1500 by the repair shop. I don't want to be one of those, so at least the knowledge gained by having this addiction is healthy and money saving. Granted, you don't have to be addicted to boats to gain that knowledge, but would we have done so? I don't think I could have had the fortitude to do such an extensive project if I didn't grow to love it. But then again, I aint finished yet  I don't aim to sound like I'm some kind of pro or anything because I'm not even close. I just feel more confident because when my boat hits the water, I'll know what's floatin me, inside and out.

Re: Is This Addicting?

It all starts with, "Well I could just replace this....." Then it quickly turns to, "Well while I have it apart...." I decided to replace my pump base on my motor this last impellor change, and now I am replaceing the bearing carrier, all the bearings, all of the lower unit seals, etc. It's all Blood & Curses, hence the name of my boat. I though I was buying a solid hull when I did, 2 years later new floors, casting decks, trailer, almost rebuilt lower unit. Still cheaper than a new boat, + I DID IT ALL! :D

Now that having been said, if I had the space for a 2nd boat that I could leisurely restore as time and finances allowed, I may enjoy it more.

Definitely addicted here! This is the only thing that takes up my spare time and thoughts(wow- that sounds bad)- aside from the wife and kids of course:D
I'm about 3/4 through my project and for some reason I can't stop thinking, and looking for an old 70's to 80's bass boat to fix up. I guess that will be my next project:cool:

And a whole lot cooler. I'm impressed you were able to work with your wife on it. The boss and I generally get along swimmingly, but that wouldn't have been the case if we attempted that:eek: Congrats!

Re: Is This Addicting?

I here you on the rebuilding thing. I have done it with snowmobiles, a rolled polaris rzr, I am in the process of building a dune buggy and now I'm looking for a good used 17' - 19' aluminum boat. I have a 89 bayliner that is in great shape, I just want a bigger aluninum, and I want to do a restoration. Theres just something about the satisfaction of doing it yourself. Any one can buy a nice boat sled or quad, but not everyone can build something unique from someone elses so called "garbage"

HHMMM...ADDICTION??
I've been in const. of one kind or another all my life. At the present I have a cab. shop. Always like to build things, it does give you a good feeling to look at a fin. product and say, "I did that". As far as an addiction, MUST be something like that. I can't think of the last time I hurried home just to get into something as horrible as a fiberglass storm and still look forward to it.
And, yes, I have caught myself looking at other project boats thinking, "I can fix that".
Happy building!:p

I barely have my boat started and I look on craigslist daily. I also look around the house at what I can sell to by materials for the boat. Sucks to be poor with rich hobbies:(

Re: Is This Addicting?

My son is only 3 and likes boats so of course I am trying to justify buying another project so he can have his own boat. Sure he cant use it for a while but its a 15' glastron with a 1962 28hp and trailer. for 150$ someone already stripped it and cut out the floor. I think they musta got scared at that point. I really want to get it but I also need glass wood and resin to fix mine.....sure do love my kid though and how cool would dad be for that. And no I don't have a problem i can stop anytime i want:rolleyes:........i just dont wanna!
