Hello,

I am wondering what the gap between the coil and fly wheel should be? And how can you measure this gap?

I know that the points gap is .020" I just need to know the coil gap.

And if anyone knows if there is a way to bench test a capacitor that would be very helpful.

Thanks

The coil edge of the laminations just line up with the boss below it. Make it perfectly flush and all should be good. There is no way to measure that gap that I know of.

Also, when you are done, just for grins, after the flywheel is on, rotate the engine by hand to make sure that you don't accidentally have one of the laminations from the coil sticking out from the boss. It makes a heck of a mess out of a coil when it hits the flywheel. Don't ask.

Make sure that you use a torque wrench and tighten the flywheel nut to the proper value.

OMC made a ring that is machined from cast iron. The coil hold down screw's are left loose. The ring is place around, or over the coils. The coils' are pulled out to touch the ring, and the screws' are tightened down. This set's the proper air gap between the coils', and fly wheel magnets'.This ring is probably still available thru the special tools'catalog.

(Magneto Coil Alignment)
(J. Reeves)

To align the coils properly, have the metal vertical portion of the coil yokes aligned with the inside edge of the bevel that exists on the top portion of the aluminum seat upon which the coils sit. This creates the proper distance between the coils and the flywheel magnets. Faulty alignment creats friction and the yokes of the coils heat up, turn blue and expand.
