Haven?t posted here for a while as I been busy in the desert riding my dirt bike. Anyways trying to get my boat ready for the summer. Had an issue with the starter on my boat as it wasn?t cranking over my boat unless you banged on the solenoid on the starter. I had the starter replaced and my mechanic came by yesterday to install the rebuilt starter. Now my boat cranks over but the boat won?t start. He removed the fuel line and it appears there isn?t any gas being pumped by the fuel pump. I know that you should hear the fuel pump when you turn the boat one but you can?t hear anything. Does the starter actuate the fuel pump? It was kind of late when he came over so we can out of daylight but he did test the relays and fuses. It seems that the fuel pump isn?t getting any kind of juice. Is there something we can do that can rule out the starter or?

Does the starter actuate the fuel pump?

Ayuh,... On a Merc. the tiny outside lug on the solenoid fires the fuelpump, While the starter is engaged...
After it starts, it gets powered thru the oil pressure switch...
But,..
You've got a Volvo,... I donno, so I'll bump this TtT for ya...

Unfortunately, your Volvo doesn't pic up power to the fuel pump like Merc does. It picks it up through diodes from the alternator and the starter relay.
Do you have a full Model number for your engine or a SN. Want to make sure I give you the proper info for your engine. Year doesn't really help.

Ahhhhhh, you have the OMC version, not the Volvo version. That was back in the days when OMC and Volvo were in the joint venture.
The good news is, you can use the Volvo manuals, the parts are all the same, just some number issues will not match up as far as Engine model numbers and serial number.
You do have an LK model which is a 97 engine.
You can also download the OEM service manuals at this link

Did you pump the throttle a few times while cranking to see if the engine would start?

Yes I tried that and still nothing. Also tried to start it with the throttle open a bit and it still wouldnt start. It cranks over no problem just wont start. Only other thing that has been done to it was a tune up. New spark plugs and oil change and gear oil aswell. Not sure if my boat is equipped with a oil sensor that causes the boat to not start incase the oil pressure gets too low.

It's not an oil sensor or any thing like it.
Do you have spark ?

I can honestly say we didn't check to see if we had spark. We should of checked.

Re: 1997 Volvo Penta 4.3GL Starter Issues

Hey Don,

So I have a update on my situation. My mechanic checked to see if we have spark and we do. After replacing the soldenoid on the starter we now have power going to the electric fuel pump but still nothing. We are thinking it might be a bad fuel pump. Is there a way to test the fuel pump to see if its truly bad? Now that I think about it we didnt test the voltage that is going to the fuel pump to verify that its getting 12v but it is a brand new battery. When the boat cranks over we dont hear the fuel pump and we remove the fuel line and no gas is coming out.

It's not an oil sensor or any thing like it.

You can bypass the fuel pump relay with a jumper for a quick test.

Download the manual and you will see a schematic. Basically, the fuel pump relay gets energized frpm two sources. One from an output of the alternator through a diode(for when engine is running) and the other from the ignition switch through a diode during cranking. You can also pull the relay out and measure the voltage that energizes the relay while you are cranking.

I see you live pretty close to me! I am in the SFV in Chatsworth.

Re: 1997 Volvo Penta 4.3GL Starter Issues

So just wanted to give everyone a update on my issue. We narrow down the issue to the fuel pump as it wasnt shooting out any gas. I purchased a fuel pump and its been installed but now its shooting out too much fuel. I think I order the wrong fuel pump. Does anyone have a part number for the fuel pump for a 1997 Volvo Penta 4.3GL. I want to make sure that I order the correct fuel pump. Also does anyone know what the pressure should be for the fuel pump. I have a CARB on my boat and its not FI. Thanks for everything.
