1955 Johnson sea horse pump

model cd-16 ser. 940358 trying to figure out how to take lower unit off to chang water pump i all ready have the 4 bolts out but only pulls out like a inch and a half

The reason you can not pull the lower and further is that the shift shaft is still connected. It is to the rear of the drive shaft. There should be a "connector" with 2 flat head screws. Take one of the screws out and it should come loose.

hey captainhook tryed a lot of screws and nun of them seem to work can i get another hint

hey captain thanks for the help it is under the power head 7 8 bolts it comes rite off and the nut holding the shaft on is rite there on the 1955 johnson sea horse:D

You got it. Captainhook was thinking of the larger motors with the shift coupling mid-leg.

Glad you found it, I was going by my 1955 evinrude 5.5 fisherman. What hp is yours?

The first year of the Fisherman 5.5 was '56. The Fisherman never had the "window" on the side with the shift release. It is possible to retrofit one with the later long upper shift rod and short lower shift rod to allow access by dropping the lower unit and removing the boat from the gap between the exhaust housing and the gearcase housing, as used on the later 6hp models.

The smallest OMC motors with the mid-leg shift rod disconnect were the 10hp models, 1954 to 1963.
