I had the loxer unit off my TN-28 to check the impeller and couldn't figure out the neutral clutch. It doesn't look like it would move anything when activated. Does anyone have a diagram of the lower unit? Or the whole motor for that matter/

Re: TN-28 Neutral Clutch

The neutral lever connects to a cable that runs down to the LU and a smaller lever. When activated, the smaller lever catches on a spring that surrounds the drive shaft. When the lever catches, the spring "unwinds" slightly loosening its grip on the shaft causing it to slip...thus neutral.

Is that spring available anymore? It looks like the top of the spring has a tab that sticks out to catch the neutral mechanism but it's to short. It must have broke or worn off.

I fixed a worn one once by straightening out the very tip of the spring in a vice, just enough to give the tab something to connect with when actuated. You don't want to go crazy with it, as the spring will break. I can't remember if I heated it first or not to take the temper out of it first. This was on an Evinrude Fleetwin with the spring clutch on the propshaft. Same idea, though.

You can probably find one on ebay...or try SeaWay Marine in Seattle.
