Teleflex 5230 steering problem

My 2004 Trophy 1804 has a Teleflex 5230 rack and pinion steering system that started slipping and jamming yesterday. The installation instructions for this unit says in all caps that the rack should not be disassembled from the pinion because improper reassembly could result in unit failure. Seems like the unit is failing anyway, so I probably have nothing to loose by taking it apart behind the dash, but just wondered if anyone has any experience with these. Thanks!

Re: Teleflex 5230 steering problem

My boat had a rack when I got it and it did the same thing, hada trip coming up and wasn't going to miss it si ended up sticking a coat hanger on top of the rach to get it to contact the teeth, very much not reccomended.

It is shot, get a Teleflex NFB system, it will outlast the boat and is a huge upgrade, you will love it.

For the record I had mine rigged for that one trip then got a new NFB system installed, you don't want to mess with steering.

Check the iboats store, they normally have the best price, the shipping is super fast, they are hard to beat and it supports the site.

Re: Teleflex 5230 steering problem

Thanks much 5150abf -- my Teleflex 5230 is a NFB model. I suspect that the hours I have logged the last couple of years with a kicker outboard linked to my 125 Mercury outboard might have put to much stress on the unit. The wheel does not turn particularly hard when the kicker is attached with a tie rod, in fact, you really can't tell much difference in turning effort, but there might be some added torsion at work there.

SO, if I need to replace the Teleflex, should I step up to a more heavy duty model? Any model recommendations?

I want to try to do this myself to save some bucks, so what is the effort to route the steering cable like? Does it make sense to attach an electrician's fish tape to the outboard end of the old cable, pull it through the hull from behind the dash, then attach the outboard end of the new cable to the fish tape and pull the new cable back to the outboard with the fish tape? Sure makes sense when I write it! ;)

Thanks for any and all thoughts and recommendations!
