Do you guys have the problem in the States of kids throwing shopping trolleys into rivers & canals? I have come across this once or twice cruising in Ireland and also here in France. It takes a certain mental ineptitude (or to put it a bit less tactfully an individual with the IQ of a mentally retarded seagull) to walk all the way to a shopping centre, steal a shopping trolley, then drag it all the way to the nearest navigable waterway. Only to lob it over a bridge only to see it disappear beneath the water at almost the same speed with which it fell through the air. What possesses someone to do such a thing?
Anyway sorry for moaning but I feel better now that I got that off my chest:(

Its my observation that kids dont steal them per'say. Low life individuals (possiby individuals who are the rightful owners of our nations wealth) tote their groceries close but not all the way to their section8 suburb home. Then their off-spring find recreation in the use and disposal of the cart. Some patrons take the bus to further destinations and leave the carts behind to be later used as a bus stop bench.

What oddjob described is the problem we have here with shopping carts and is very common. Another thing with shopping carts that really pissed me off is when they left it where their car was parked. Even if it's just 1-2 parking spaces away from the cart coral so it can become a paint job nightmare on wheels.

I am with you Capt...we have some local idiots who chuck shopping carts in the river. What a dumb thing to do.

They get nice and rusty so if anyone does try to clean up the river could easily be cut, they keep any lures snagged on them and generally cause more problems than one would think.

Lots of old bikes tossed in there too. I weep for the future.

I think homeless people who could not care less about the world they live in use the carts and throw them when done.

The gas thing is that on this side of 'the pond' you generally have to put a ?1 coin in to a slot to get a shopping trolley, you then get your ?1 back when you return the trolley. But that does not deter the more dedicated twit who is happy to invest a euro to see a splash

The barges over here when fully loaded usually rub along the botton of the canals so they flatten the trolleys (trouble is you get the feeling that they could do the same to your boat if you get in their way ) The pic below was taken on the River Seine but meeting these guys on a narrow canal is occasionally eventful.
