problems with, and what year is my new to me 9.5?

picked up a 9.5 today, rough condition but ran well when he demo'd it, so I sprung for it.

numbers are
9022c
e03817
I couldn't find a working link to a motor guide, any idea what year it is? If it's even a 9.5

Next on to my problem, motor has an old metal gas tank in good condition, new primer bulb and lines, all the fuel lines under the hood look good, motor starts and idles for 3-5 minutes, revs up, and generally runs well, then will suddenly die. The fuel pump looks shiny enough that it might have been replaced, it runs OK when it's running, smokes a little too much I think, and will restart after a minute or two when it shuts off.
it's spraying pretty hot water out the blow hole along with exhaust, seems to be pumping OK.

My first thought is to re-set the carb and adjust from there, it looks pretty clean no telling if the carb needs a rebuild though, the choke is opening and closing fine and if I pull out the choke it'll kill hte motor running, if that helps.

I'm out to do a compression check while I fish for advice :D

couldn't get a reliable compression test, the nipple on my gauge interferes with the piston so I couldn't get a good seal, read 30psi but that's with no seal. going to go decarbon it.

seems to run a little better after a decarbon, poured seafoam in the cylinders and let soak, then got it running and poured down carb, running marvel mystery in the tank.
seems to me that the fuel pump isn't pumping, if I keep priming it, she runs a little longer I think.
attached pics of it running, tried to get the cooling spray but it's hard to see since it sprays rather than streams, seems like the water is too hot and it's not pumping enough of it, what do you guys think?

9022 is the 9.5HP Evinrude 1970 model year.

Elevate the tank so that the lift pump does not have to work so hard. If you set the tank higher than the engine, gravity will take over and you can run without a fuel pump.

The smoke will make the engine run rough because it's being pulled in with the air when you have the cover on while running in a bucket.

When running in a bucket, make sure the water is up to the bottom of the midsection so that it covers the waterpump. You should check the impeller and the thermostat anyway.

You should have water spitting from that exhaust relief at the back anytime the engine is running and you should be able to hold your fingers on the cylinder head for a three count anytime the engine is running.

The waterpump can be working fine with water blowing steadily out of the exhaust relief and still overheat if the thermostat is bad.

I took the stat out for a trial run, it doesn't blow any more water, and the water coming out the blow hole is still pretty hot, I've got the lower unit draining now, some genius replaced the lube and put the screws back in without nylon washers, I'll look at the impeller, thanks!

the impeller is new, I took it out and the fins haven't even taken a set yet, they're soft and pliable as well. I was told he put a new impeller in it, but I like to verify

Is it possible the impeller is too big? I've read the fins straighten out in one portion of the housing, I had to bend the fins to get them in place and slide the housing over them, they're maybe 1/2" longer than the housing
last question today, I boiled the stat and wasn't happy with the results, is it safe to run it without a T stat until my new one arrives?

The 9.5 runs better with the thermostat and won't foul plugs as fast, but it would take a good while to do much damage running without one.

Use synthetic TC-W3 oil when you can, the engine will run better.

If the compression is low, you could try running with a Champion J6C instead of the J4C. The hotter plugs work a little better on a worn 9.5.

thanks for all the help!

I'm running some pennzoil synth blend, will go full synth next time.
I wanted to take it out on the lake tomorrow and test it out and see if it runs any better out of the barrel, will change the plugs to J6C and see if it runs any better as well.

the barrel looks like the exon valdeez just dumped in it, nasty.

I noticed the plugs in the motor were J6J and knew from reading around here those were superseded by j6c plugs, so figuring they might be pretty old replaced them.

I also took the time to check the spark, both cylinders easily jump a 10mm gap so I'm confident they're both firing.

I checked my mixture, I mixed my oil a little richer than I should, 15oz in 5 gallons instead of 13 (easier measuring..) shouldn't be a problem should it? With 4 more oz of marvel mystery on top maybe that's part of the problem.
