Parts interchangeability with Volvo Penta

Hi all,

I am trying to find several parts for my 1995 Volvo Penta 5.0FL PHUE engine with SX drive.

I was able to get the OEM# from the 1995 Volvo Penta diagrams online at their official site ( http://www.volvopentastore.com/ ) and match the part numbers with what I need. I also see that it seems to match part numbers to some Evinrude and OMC brands. Are these parts interchangeable to the other brands too? (For example, on Seirra's product interchange, it shows that OEM#3853807 gimbal bearing matches two brands, Volvo and OMC.)

Re: Parts interchangeability with Volvo Penta

I've got the same engine and drive (Ford 302 and SX drive) only mine is OMC.

They are both indentical. VP and OMC were in a partnership during the mid 90's, until OMC went out of business. Then VP bought out all of SX rights.

Some of the parts I get are OMC Bombardier and some are Volvo Penta.

Do you have the service manuals?

Yes, I do have the Volvo Penta manuals for most if not all of the engines/drives. I never did look at all the books, but the SX manual didn't show any part interchange lists there

I don't know of a parts interchange list.

The schematics on Doug Russel have both a VP section and an OMC section, you just have to look at both.

Or you can use Iboats schematics and go to the Bombardier website. They still have the OMC sterndrive parts schematic. From those part numbers, you can order from wherever you want to.

Re: Parts interchangeability with Volvo Penta

I have looked at schematics for Evinrude, OMC and the VP SX, and they seem to look the same. That doesn't tell me if the parts are physically the same though.

Since I'm not a dealer or marine mechanic, I have no clue about a part I buy online (parts and descriptions seem to match, but different makers) and it will suck if the part isn't what it seems. I will then have to send the part back and get another. The only thing I have matching the parts to manufacturers is the Seirra part interchange. http://ww2.sierramarine.com/sierra/catalog/inter2.asp Not all parts will be found there, though

I checked out the Doug Russell parts search and compared OMC with Volvo Penta with part number 3853807. Both carry the same identical part number, but different prices. Why is that??

Doug Russel uses different suppliers?

I have no idea why different prices. I don't know how to convince you on parts interchangability. I've ordered OMC parts from an OMC supplier and received a genuine Volvo Penta part with a VP service update on how to install.

Finding the same part numbers should be reassuring, but if your still unsure, just buy VP parts. Skip the sierra.

Re: Parts interchangeability with Volvo Penta

Doug Russell doesn't have all the parts I want, so I have to go to another link ( www.boats.net ) It's very easy to search for the parts, but when I did a multiple search it gave me Evinrude prices, which was higher than the OMC prices. They didn't have the Volvo Penta as the search option. As long as the OEM part #s are interchangeable, I don't mind getting them. It would suck to order an OMC part with same # as VP and it means two different parts (that's in my head though). I'm sure all you marine mechanics out there know the difference (or compatibility), which is why I asked this question in the first place :D

I do not want to buy the authentic VP parts if I don't need to. It's like buying the same parts for Ford that fits Mazda. Mazda prices are higher......

Heres a link to a past discussion on VP/OMC parts.

I'm not the guru around here, that's Don's title, and in this thread, he pretty much cuts through all of the speculation. :D

I would be nice to have Don chime in, but thanks to your link, I see enough evidence that supports my suspicions:

A quote from Don...

They are not only similar, they are EXACTLY the same thing. The outside is OMC, the inside is Volvo. They were produced between 94 and 98 between Volvo and OMC as a joint venture. After that, Volvo bought out OMC and it was all Volvo, and OMC no longer existed.

And my SX drive is the 1995 Volvo Penta....

I just wonder why Evinrude/Johnson was shown as an option on my parts search? That's where I got confused with the VP, OMC, EvinJohn whirlwind.....
