puttin around at idle speed and ran aground on a real soft bottom. it basically sputtered to a stop and the engine shut off. Got unstuck, started er up and she ran fine for the next half hour back to the dock. Only thing I noticed was an intermittent grumble that seemed like it was coming from inside the engine. It does it every 5 seconds or so for about 2 seconds. Checked everything that I could think of and it seems to be normal. any ideas of what I can or should check or do?? thanks

How much mud did you suck up?? Hook up the hose or put it in the water(better) and start. Then start removing drain plugs.Use a piece of weedeater string to help unblock the plugged ones. This will help if it's full of junk.J

Re: ran aground

I dont think I sucked up too much crap. After we got it unstuck it started right up and it ran good for the next 20-30 minutes before we got back to the dock. Its a stainless prop, checked it out and it looked normal. Like I said the only problem that I could see or hear was the engine makin a weird almost like a cavitation noise every 5 seconds or so. Temp and oil pressure was normal.

It is always possible that you 'spun' the rubber insert of your prop...you can test for this by making a line with a magic marker, go for a serious test run...and seeing if the line is still straight.

Or if you have a good spare prop, give it a test run.

Re: ran aground

Just a wild guess but did you check power steering fluid? Was noise always there and you just noticed it because it ran aground causing you to pay extra close attention to sounds and vibrations?

Re: ran aground

Also possibly a bearing in a pully, alternator, water pump ect.

Re: ran aground

I agree with Rock Road, it sounds like you 'spun' the rubber insert of your prop. Does it make this noise while in neutral? Or only while in gear? If only in gear I would strongly suspect the Prop hub. Regards

Re: ran aground

I checked the prop hub, it seems to be ok. It is actually pretty new because the one I just replaced was full of cracks from when I bought the boat.

The sound does it no matter what gear Im in. To me the sound seems like its coming from somewhere in the engine. Thats why Im confused how running aground at idle speed would make the engine make that noise.

Re: ran aground

It is an unusual sound I agree. I also agree that it could be a bearing on a pulley or something up front. Quick and easy test is to run it without the front belt for a short time and see if the sound goes away. While you have the belt off, go ahead and turn the various pulleys by hand and see if any feel rough.

Re: ran aground

almost sounds like the power steering pressure relief valve, have heard similar sounds in auto's... (in an auto you can hear that sound sometimes by turning the wheel to the stops) is NOT a normal sound in my mind...
wouldn't run till it breaks could cost lot of money... I would find the prob and fix it...

a little preventative maintanance goes a long way!

please post what ya find will be interesting to find out what is wrong.
