I was tightening the flywheel today on my little 4HP and the crankshaft broke off under the nut :( Unfortunately, this little guy, who was a really nice little engine until this, is a goner.

First : Are there any tricky welding repairs that safely fixes this that isn't expensive?
Second: If not, anyone need parts? This was a good engine until today. The cowling was cracked, but the rest of it was in good shape (the impeller, prop, etc are is OK). It is not a long shaft. It is in North Carolina .

Thanks in advance!

Sorry to here that. I think your right to say it's a parts engine now. Best of luck. Rick.

Why not find a crankshaft for it and fix it? They're about as easy as you could hope to get into. No needle bearings to worry about. Very few parts to keep track of. Good little motors are hard to find...

Re: Johnson 4HP 4w71

I did look around, and could not find a crankshaft. Everything I found in the way of whole engines as a donor on google/ebay/craigslist were too far away or were suspicious shape (ie locked up) or were too expensive ($250 firm for a non-running engine!). This engine doesn't have sentimental value or I would look harder. New crankshafts are obviously not available and I don't think I would drop the money if they were.

Thanks for the replies!
