Upon dewinterizing the old girl today after work in preperation for the holiday weekend drained the A/F out of the block and mani pulled plugs to turn over a few times so as not to foul the plugs w/ fogging oil and just the clatter of the starter like it wasn't strong enough to turn the engine over? H ave had the battery on the charge on and off all winter after refilling with new acid but never repeated charge voltage metered the battery voltage and it read 12.3 volts I would have thought that would have been enough but no so just to be sure pulled starter and had nap test it and it worked perfectly engages fin plenty of torque replaced it and nada @that point I squirted some oil into the cylinders and turned it over easily w/a 3/8 ratchet and 1/2 socket on the cam shaft pully. I did get the starter to crank the engine over @ one point but didn't want to fry the starter so my conclusions are leading me to battery replacement? Whattaya guys think and by the way all the electrical connetions and grounds are tight and cleaned.

Pull a know good battery from your truck or another vehicle and try it and you'll know for sure, or go buy a new battery and if that doesn't work clean all your connections, at least you'll have a spare battery if your old is good.

You never add acid to a battery , it kills it quicker.Go try a known good battery or buy a new one.

My thoughts exactly but started getting a little frustrated and I don't like working like so I hung it up for the day. Leaning toward the battery though and I did have some issues with the battery upon laying up. 70 Do you hit Berlin @ all ? the water level is realy high but that could change overnight. Thanx for the input

It's not the volts, it's amps available. Take your battery to someplace like Autozone and have it load tested. A battery can read 12+ volts but not be able to provide the cranking amps to turn the engine over.

Exactly. I assume you've pulled and cleaned the cable connections at the battery, block and starter? The battery cables themsleves are in good shape? Make sure you've done that and also load test the battery. How old is it? Unless you feel it's time to replace it anyway, zero in on the issue first so you throw your money in the right direction.

Funny you should mention that, I did just hit Berlin last weekend for the first time in my adult life, I've always shyed away Berlin cause I remeber from a kid that dad always either got the boat stuck or hit something with the prop.
I matured on West Branch as a Boater but I'm would like to explore Berlin now that I've got a taste of it. By the way I brought home home 5 Berlin walleye 15" and over.

70 it's a good lake up til around the mid part of july early august and the corp of engineers starts letting the water out and levels drop as much as 3 to 4 foot but durng the season just stay @ least 20' from shoreline and you'll be ok yea fishing good most all year long. Oh yea a good freind of mine lives in Kent Ken Thompson we worked @ Accuride(Ultra Forge) together for 17 years.

Well I finally had a end to a bad de-winterization bought a new battery and she fired on the about the 5th revolution let her sit and idle for 20 minutes or so with a little sea-foam in the tank and a couple of drops in the crank case and carb she's as smooth as she was when I put her up maybe even better when my new plugs arive tommorrow even had time to scrub her carpets and wash the hull ready for this comming weekend with the admiral and kids.
