Hi'
please help, I'm new to ( Iboats ) and gale outboards I just got a 1957? 12 hp from the dump and I'm unsure how to take the cowling off, motor is in ruff shape lots of oxide, paint missing, and cowling screw rusted and stripped off, I see no latches like on my rude, of the same era. got everything sprayed down with pent/oil so until I know how to open the hood I'll let her soak.

thanks' up-front

Sorry I can't tell you the procedure on a 12 horse but I have several earlier small horsepower Gales and their cowlings are all secured by screws.
But if the motor shows a lot of oxide I'd check first to see if it's stuck internally before I invested a lot of time in a 'salter'. While I'm a big fan of rescuing unloved, discarded old outboards I have discovered over time that one that has been long used in salt water is often an exercise in frustration.

Any model number? usually on a plate on top of the mounting clamp.
Can you turn it over?does it appear to have compression?
Was it in salt or just in a damp storage? Picture would help but it is likely cowls
all bolt on.

on my 1958 gale buccaneer 12hp the port side is held on by clamps one in front one in back the stbd side has two screws in center and the top has four screws you can get to after the two sides are off in my experience its easier to take the stbd side off if you take off the shift lever

Sorry a bit new to this (I did read the FAQ' was just a long day) anyway

model# 12D15B SN# 692961

I will see if I can get a photo up, It won't pull over right now but I am hoping I can get it to pull over with a bit of oil in the cylinders, plugs out, and a bit of luck. first job is to get inside and sniff around, and I don't want to mess things up before I even get started... thanks KB

Re: Gale buccaneer help

You are right, it is a 1957.

1. Pull the shift handle outward and then turn it downward. That will get it out of the way so the side cover can come off.

2. Remove the choke knob

3. Remove the two screws from each of the side covers and lift them off.

3. Remove the 4 screws from the top cover and lift it off. If you plan to remove the recoil starter, do it now. Otherwise you will have to remove the starter handle to get the rope out of the top cover.

4. Lots of luck, considering where you got it.

Re: Gale buccaneer help

Added the photos as you can see she is ruff, I will do all I can to go for a boat ride with this on the back, I live on Kodiak island in Alaska and I know of no other Gal / buc on the Island. The good news is motor is mostly complete. Thanks for the replys! If its the srews on the sides that hold on the hood I think I will have to drill them off? the heads are stripped, rusted and all but gone. any advise / ideas would be great! thanks KB

Drill off the heads and see whats inside.I have a feeling its a lost cause. Some sea foam in the plug holes if you can get them out.Lots of PB blaster on nuts and bolts.
Pull the powerhead exhaust cover and look around.(if you can get the screws out)
Let us know what you find.

Re: Gale buccaneer help (update)

Thanks to all for the help! I got the hood open and the inside is worse than the out. She looks like she may have took a swim in salt water years ago. But I still hope to take a boat ride with her on the back someday, I don't look at it as a shot motor, There is allot of good stuff here.. I'm still happy to have got it out of the dump..I'll just have to go slow.

Still moving fwrd, I have got several of the bolts out of the power head have not (so far) snapped any off, this is going to be my plan soak for 2-4 days with the pen/pb blaster/ sea foam etc. then heat and remove a bolt or 2 ---repeat the process. slow, steady course!
