Hi all
New to this site
Just acquired a 1985 Evinrude outboard (model BE15BACOB).
Now hair pulling out time ???
Water pump question ?
I only have a drip coming out of the pee hole, I have changed the impeller but not the casing (black plastic type) or seals.
I have checked the thermostat and it looks to be OK.
The motor purrs like a kitten with no misfiring or grumpy running etc and after running either with muffs on or in a tub of water after 10 mins or so it isn?t excessively hot as I can touch the cylinder head constantly and it?s not that hot.
I have not had it running on my boat as yet.
It?s definitely pumping as water exits the prop and spray comes from the exhaust balancing hole just below the powerhead, and water doesn?t seem to be leaking to anywhere else.
I?ve checked YouTube and the same engines give out a constant pee from the pee hole !
Mine does not but it runs great and it?s not overheating ???

Do I need to worry ??????????????????????????????????????????

Any help would be gratefully appreciated.

The hole might be plugged up. Try roding it out with a piece of wire. That happened to me a while back. Some bugs got in there and plugged the hole.

Hi Doug

Done that !
I took off the whole pee pipe and blew my airline down it.
The motor looks to be nearly new under the cover with original paint etc so I'm sure all is well but don't wan to get on the water and then it breaks......

Cheers

Well, Andy, I'm not a whiz like the other guys in the forum. The other thing I could think of is a gasket covering up a port, but that is purely a guess. You might get more responses by putting the problem statement in the title of the post.

I spent 8 months in Chester, England last year and loved it. The the live-aboard canal boats over there are really something.

Did you make sure the copper pipe that connects to the top of the water pump housing was in place, especially at the top? and did you replace the O ring gaskets that go on each end with the new ones you got if you bought a kit?

One thing to make sure of is that you have the leg well submerged in a barrel. Sometimes there isn't sufficient water above the pump to make it pump right. The other thing to try is to drop the leg again and connect a garden hose directly to your water tube and purge the system with the hose pressure. As mentioned above it is very critical to make certain the water tube fits inside the water pump grommet. Sometimes it doesn't line up right and pinches the hole off. In the end, you should get a nice steady stream of water. Best of luck. Rick.

Re: Evinrude 15hp 1985

Thanks everyone but "ALL'S WELL THAT ENDS WELL"
Fixed the damn thing.
Took the bottom leg off and attached a custom made fitting to the copper pipe and hit it with full mains pressure ....... better but still a trickle.
Then took out the plastic pee pipe fitting off and attached a custom made fitting to the rubber pee pipe and back flushed it with mains pressure......

Hey Presto.... when I re-attached the fitting to the copper pipe and pressured it up, it pee'd like a fire truck as you guy's in the US of A would say.
Must have been salt/gunk residue sitting there blocking the exit to the pee pipe.
Re fitted the lower leg and fired her up ....... major peeing straight away.
I can now sleep tonight. There may just be a god! Err perhaps not but I'm well happy now!

Cheers to all
