1985 merc 228 reverse rumble

My freind has a merc 228 alpha drive that has a rumble in reverse ,More pronounced when tilted up,She said the drive has not been serviced for a while.I am going to remove drive to find out what the problem is ,Kinda sounds like a u joint.I generally work on omc is there any special tricks for the alpha?

Don't run the drive tilted or trimmed past the limit.

Always place in FORWARD gear when removing drive or lower unit.

At first it only made the rumble while in reverse even tilted half way .put it in forward and it didn't make andy noise for 15 minutes of cruising,Then heard the rumble start again,limped it back to the dock.Thanks for the reply
