Wow this was just on the news.......

Car hits 2 moose

Brunswick, Vermont - May 26, 2010

An unusual accident in the Northeast Kingdom: A car struck not one, but two moose at the same time.

It happened late at night May 18 on Route 102 in Brunswick. Both moose landed on top of the car, crushing the hood and roof. Melissa Hildreth, 41, was driving the car. She survived. Both animals died.

I feel bad for the Moose :(

Shouldn't the plural of moose be meese? Or mooses? :D

As for the accident, YIKES!!!!! That IS some bad luck ... and how do you explain that to your spouse? "Honest, honey, I didn't see 2 giant moose (or is it meese, or mooses) standing in the middle of the road!"

I at least hope she got to keep the animals for consumption.;)

Meese, or mooses are very dark, and their eyes don't shine. Driving fast on a dark night in moose territory is like Russian roulette.

Animals can surprise you for sure. A mile from home at 12:30 am the other night, 2 deer suddenly jumped onto the road, and one darted in front of me. I hit the brakes at first sight, and was probably doing about 30 when I broadsided her and launched her 20 feet into the ditch. She got her bearings in about 30 seconds and scedaddled. I was left standing there with a flashlight looking at my newly reshaped hood.

There was a show on one of the Discovery channels about moose vs car accidents. In Newfoundland, they say they average one a day. Most of the time the driver of the car does not survive. Many of the cars end up being totaled.

When I was stationed in Brunswick Maine, I took a trip on my bike to Rangley Lake region. Went around a curve and about hit a doe sunning herself in the middle of the road. I stopped, she got up and apparently didn't like Triumph motorcycles. I think that was the fastest I had ever did a "U" turn in the middle of the road. I didn't start pulling away from her until I was going over 40mph. :D

Real entertainment is the stories of folks who see them on the road and stop in time.

Then, for some odd reason, they feel compelled to get out and try to convince that 1200lb+ bull moose to get off the road.

SS, I'm from the East Coast of Canada, and I've heard a few guys talk about driving rigs over there. Apparently its pretty common.

They're dark and hard to see at night if there's no moon, kinda like a black angus steer.

I think you're right.
Hit a deer or bear, and you hit the body, the animal often runs off.

Hit the legs, and they are down, then the deputy shoots them.
