I have a 1981 Mercury7.5 hp and a 1978 Johnson 9.9 both run great but I got to sell 1 which would be the best to keep. I 've been told by both dealers that the other one is going to be hard to get parts for.

You will not have any problem finding parts for the 9.9. The 9.9 is very much in demand and marketable.

If you go to the BRP parts catalog for your 9.9 and look at the parts list, you can easily identify what parts are no longer available. http://shop.evinrude.com/

Mercury discontinues parts way quicker than BRP for older motors. My Dad was a dealer who sold both new and Mercury was much tougher for 20 to 30 year old motors. Mercury just obsoletes or discontinues parts way quicker than BRP. Having worked on both, I can tell you Merc's are more challenging to work on.

Never listen to a dealor. They are F. O. S. They tell you these things, because they of course want you to come back and buy a new motor. Often times when they no longer stock parts, other people will have the parts you need for many years. The dealors are just one source out of many.

The best way to determine which is the best motor to keep, is to check them over thoroughly and keep the one that is in the best mechanical condition. Do a compression test on the two of them and see which one has the best readings.
