I am not one to keep track of the cost of hobbies, but my wife mentioned that it seems like my boat is the most expensive hobby I have. I decided to account for the project. Here is what I have spent on my boat over the last three years:(
Boat: 1500
Floor: 325
Upholstery: 70
Timing light: 30
Compression tester: 20
Spark plugs: 14
Starter: 86
Rectifier: 15
Lower unit: 350
Water pump kit: 55
Battery: 90
Reed assembly gaskets: 12
Almost 2700 total

Does it ever end? This year it wont even start!

That doesn't seem like much for three years of boating to me.

...my wife mentioned that it seems like my boat is the most expensive hobby I have.

Next time she says that, you should reply either:

"what, you mean besides you, right?"

or,

"it's a cheaper hobby than coke and hookers!"

:D

Re: Throw the money in that hole in the water

my wife would be ecstatic if those were my costs...

in four years, I spent

Year 1

$1800 1st boat, $300-400 in maint/repairs and sold it for $2300

Year 2

$11,500 2nd boat, $200 in maintenance/repairs, $700 electronics over 2 years, sold for $10k

Year 4

$30K+ on brand new boat... no maintenance yet.....

But in all seriousness, having boat a used boat for $1500 and put $1200 into it over 3 years is not bad.

If she takes pleasure in the boat at all, split the cost down the middle! :)

I guess I've been lucky. My boat is a 1985. I've had it 14 years and have spent way less than 2700 bucks on it, including trailer maintenance. I think the biggest repair that I paid someone else to do for me was a shift cable about 10 years ago at $165....Yes, I use it. Matter of fact, I was out on it today.:D

I'd say you're doing pretty good. I quit counting how much I dropped in mine.

That's only $75/month and unlike a new boat, you don't HAVE to make a payment next month. Plus, the end result is very family friendly unlike other hobbies...

Hey kids:
-Who wants to spend all weekend polishing the hot rod?
-Who wants to spend all weekend watching birds?
-Who wants to spend all weekend organizing my stamp collection?

-Who wants to spend all weekend on the boat?:D

2700 that's it? that's not much. when we left the sport of ATVs I had a tally of $80,000 including truck, trailer, quads etc.

tell her there are worse things you could do.

Re: Throw the money in that hole in the water

If ya buy an old boat, aren't you agreeing upfront that you will spend a bunch of money on it? Maybe you spread it out over time but you will pay in both cash and time. I spent almost $20,000 in actual cash (can't believe people use credit on toys) plus a couple of winterizations on my used boat a few years back so I expected to spend it upfront and get nickeled and dimed later. Of couse I could have gotten a lemon in which case my premise would have gone out the window. This year it will be the 100hour service so the nickel and diming will start soon. For us it was between a boat and a new deck on the house. We can't plan our vacations around a deck but we can around boating. I can't get past the fact that some boards fashioned together cost what a boat does. Bank balances aren't nearly as fun as boating and is where I break my frugality rules.

ATV is a hobby I still have. One for each family member (5) including our latest Kawasaki 50 just purchased for my daughters 5th birthday, and she loves it as much as I love my quad!:D

If you hadn't of got into boating, you wouldn't be a member here now would you? :D

Having fun comes with a price. Many people can't afford to do the things that we do and I feel privileged to do so. Its about a $3K a year price for me counting dockage, fuel, and upkeep. If I didn't spend the money on boating, I would be spending it on something else,,,,,,,,,,,,,maybe the Mrs. :D
