My 1986 Mercury 150 Blackmax warning signal is going off randomly, sometimes the 2 beep oil alarm, sometimes the overtemp long beep. I have replced both thermostats, the sending unit, the oil level switch, and the beeper.

My mechanic was advised by Mercury to replace a magnetic rod in the ignition timming circuit.

Has anyone else experienced this problem?

Spend your next wad of money on a factory maintenance manual. Then go through the diagnostic routine in the manual to get to the bad part.

I have no idea what a magnetic rod in the ignition timing circuit is, or what it would have to do with this. I suspect you mean the magnet in the oil pump that drives the rotation sensor which feeds the alarm module.

Odds are you're looking at a simple short in the alarm circuit from a mouse bite, but still the best way to the fault is systematic diagnosis.

BTW, Black Max means it's big and it's black. Other than that the name has no information about your engine in it. I deduced from the text that it is a V6.

hope it helps

Re: Random alarms

It was the magnetic rod in the oil pump driver. It had cracked and would move from centrifical force. Thanksfor your help.

There were some towers with the BM logo on them. You might be partly right and the range is big oil injected black motor.:D
