Shifted into gear with revs too high.

So I have been having issues with my 140 Johnson not pulling past 2100 rpm. I replaced the stator and the timer base and took it up to the lake for a water test. The other day I left the key on while bringing it home and killed the battery, so I charged it up with my cheesy charger which indicated a 100% charge. When I got to the lake I dunked the boat in, and it started fine. I guess I didn't warm it up long enough and it stalled after a couple seconds in reverse gear. I started it back up, and when I shifted back into reverse, I had my foot on the throttle (reving to around 1500 rpm), the motor clunked and stalled. I go to start it back up, and it won't turn the motor over ( will move slighty, but not enough to turn). My onboard amp meter shows 12v when the key is turned on, and dips to 10v when I try start it. My question is, is the battery issue a coincident, or did I mess something up in the motor and now the motor won't turn. I hope I didn't cause another problem when I was trying to test another problem. Just my luck. If anyone could tell me if it's common to mess up a motor from shifting into gear with the throttle pushed. I feel like a total idiot, at least no one was at the launch to see it but me. LOL. Thanks in advance.

Pull the lower unit and see if the engine will turn over by manually turning the flywheel (ignition off). If so, you've bollixed up the lower unit, probably busted one of the dogs or some other internal part. If it still won't turn over, the problem is in the powerhead.

Both spell $$$.

Yikes. Not what I wanted to hear by any means. I purchased a new charger and I am hoping it is a battery problem. I tested the battery and it read 12.47 v when I got home. I am going up to the lake tomorrow so I will give it another try. Do I have to pull the lower unit to test for damage? Would turning the motor over with the flywheel (plugs removed) tell me anything? Would a bad lower end effect the starting of the engine in neutral?

Sure. You can pull the plugs and try turning the flywheel. If it turns freely over the full 360 degrees, you could try starting it when the battery is charged. However, from the symptoms you described, I suspect a larger problem.

If you have broken parts in the gearcase, it could jam even in neutral. The driveshaft is always turning and the pinion gear is always engaged.

Take your time and try to diagnose the source of the problem. Don't be cranking that engine with the starter until you know it's free.
