Evinrude vro question

was wondering on a 1987 90 hp vro, why is it that i've been told that you shouldn't run the gas out of the carbs, etc the way i typically would with my old 15 hp pre-mix.( before taking out of water, unplugging gas line and letting it run till it dies). is it just so the vro system doesn't load your float bowl with straight 2 stroke oil? thanks

Re: Evinrude vro question

You will find many different answers to that question as I found out. I used to run mine out of fuel as well, what they say is one of the carbs will run out of fuel before the other causeing two cyl to ride along with no oil till the other carb runs out. The oil from the vro is carried in the gas.

exactly, also if oil tank is higher than carbs, oil can siphon, and fill carbs.

I had an '85 Johnson 140 with VRO > VRO II which I routinely ran dry when done, and never had a problem. Sold it a few years ago with > 1000 hours.

Re: Evinrude vro question

My opinion (and practice) applies only to carburated motors. DI motors (Ficht and Etec) are damaged by running dry (and there is no reason to anyway, since the fuel systems are sealed).
