Re: Water cooling problem?
That would be a 6R74C. To access the water pump:
1. Remove spark plugs, and shift to forward gear.
2. Remove the 4 bolts holding the lower unit on.
3. Slowly rotate flywheel while pull lower unit downward. There is a pin that has to come down through a slot. When it aligns, the lower uinit will come down a bit more. STOP turning the flywheel when it does, and don't turn it any more till motor is reassembled
4. Now look in the gap above the lower unit. You will see the brass shift rod connector. Completely remove one screw.
5. The lower unit is now free to come down and away. Note the position of the pin so you can put it back the same way for reassembly. The water pump will be right in front of you. You do NOT have to remove the pin. Just slide the shaft out once you remove the pump screws and housing.
6. When you go to put it back together, use a flashlight to peer in there and make sure the notch in the shift rod is EXACTLY aligned with the screw hole in the brass connector before installing the screw. If the screw rubs on the edge of the notch, it will wipe the threads off and then the screw will fall out. But never at dockside--always 5 miles away from shore.
