repairing cracked plastic

Due to a winter structure collapsing on my pontoon boat, the plastic molded base of one of the seats has severe damage. Replacing it is cost prohibitive. I feel it is repairable with epoxy fiberglass and CSM. Will this work or is there a better way? BTW when repaired it will be covered with vinyl.

Re: repairing cracked plastic

There is plastic epoxy and there is also a plastic electric welder that uses hot air and plastic rods.

I have had VERY good luck with the two part plastic epoxy but it depends on how big the piece is.

Thanks Bob, I'll check it out. Will fibreglass be a mistake?

Plastic flexes, fiberglass doesn't. Probably seperate.

Re: repairing cracked plastic

3M makes a great plastic repair epoxy. It is for fixing bumpers on newer cars. I used it when restoring a 93 GMC Typhoon and the stuff worked far better than I expected. I imagine it would do the trick for you as long as you have all the pieces of the base.

You will have to get this at an automotive paint supply warehouse. Autozone won't have it. Or, I have never seen it in any of the parts stores.
