I have a 1985 GT 150 v6 Got it on a boat from a friend. Boat had sunk, but the motor head had not gone under. He pulled the boat out and tried to start. It fired then pulled water into the carb bowls and died. I drained and cleaned everything. Pulled Carbs and rebuilt(New Oem Parts). Pulled plugs, Sprayed cylinders with oil, Put new plugs in. Used a spray bottle with 50:1 in it to get it started. Runs awsome with the muffs. Started it several times. this morning. Starts with very little turn of the key. Now for the prob. Took it to the lake tonight and put it in the water. DID NOT want to start. Finally got it started and did not like throttle at all. Then died. Would not start. Figured out if I pulled the motor Just high enough out of the water to get half of the hub out of the water it would start. It Would idle up with the idle lever. Thank God for Trolling motors. It was windy!! I put it back on the trailer and took it home. I hooked it up to the hose. Runs like a top. Any Ideas???

Re: Will not run in water!!

Without backpressure on the underwater exhaust, even a crappy running outboard can run all day and sound happy doing it. You can't judge how well it'll run till you put a load on it.

Back to basics: compression test and spark test. Report your results.

Describe your cold start procedure.

Owned 2 Gt150s, Loved them. Never had any major issues with them,

They also took a few trips under water unfortunatly, but your issue sounds like it has nothing to do with the boat sinking since you said it didnt get the power head under water.

Sounds likea previous issue... Do a compression test let us know the results.

Agree with all the above.

Compression test, then a spark test, with a box. Not just pull the plug and see if it sparks.

Re: Will not run in water!!

Just got done with the basics. All six are within 5lbs of each other and over 90lb. All six spark over 1/2 inch. I had my son out to help me turn it over while I was looking at spark.(Kids are good for something!! Lol) I had him throttle up with the engine off. Noticed the advance lever was not moving. I looked at it the other day and it was moving, but forgot that the advance arm was spring loaded. It would turn, but turned to hard for the spring to pull. 2 squirts of electronics cleaner and moves with no effort at all. Pretty sure that was it. Im 25 miles to the lake so is their anything else I should double check before I make the trek???? Thanks guys.

Just make sure the link arm is connected between the spark advance lever and the timer base.
